Kiwi Speak (Colloquialisms)
This is kiwi speak, our slang, our way of talking. Some of it's uniquely New Zealand, and some is more a mix of international adaption with an original home grown twist. Sayings & Meanings
Banger: A sausage. Often used together with mash as in "Bangers and mash" - sausages and mashed potato.
Barbie: A barbecue or shortened to BBQ.
Barrack for: To cheer for someone or something. You'd barrack for your local team at a rugby match.
Bash: A party. eg. Are you going to the bash tonight?
Bastard: Term of endearment (usually) ie Lucky B. Funny B. Ugly B. Big B. - Contributed by Peter Guy
Big Bickies: Lots of money. If you saw an expensive looking watch you'd say it's probably worth big bickies.
Big Smoke: Referring to the city, or a town larger than where the person currently is. It's sometimes also used sarcastically when referring to a very small town.
Big Spit: To throw up or vomit. If you're at a party and someone is goes outside to vomit they can be described as going outside to have the big spit.
Bikie: A member of a motorbike gang.
Blabba Mouth: A person who doesn't know when to shut up and keep something to themselves (usually a secret). - Contributed by Nikki
Bloddy oats: An affirmation or agreement. ie. If I said that fish and chips were nice and you agreed you'd say "Bloody oats". - Contributed by Juliette
Bloke: The common man. Ordinary guy in the street. - Contributed by Frank Macskasy
Bloody Oath!: Too right; exactly; - Contributed by Murray
Blowie: Referring to oral sex. Blow job, to give head. - Contributed by Juliette
Bludge: To sponge off others. ie. Someone receiving the dole (social welfare benefit) is sometimes referred to as a Dole Bludger.
